Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies

Requirements: Familiarity with basic principles in telecommunications.
Goal: Gaining knowledge about transmission systems that use copper wires, optical fibers and radio links as medium, that are mostly present in fixed and mobile telecommunication networks. Introduction to processes of creating technical documentation, design and realization of transmission systems, control and maintenance.
Outcome: Students are able to work on design and realization of transmission systems and their exploitation.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introduction to digital transmission systems.
  2. Bit error rate (BER). Measuring equipment for assessment of quality of signal.
  3. Interfaces on transmission systems: electrical G.703, optical STM-N and Ethernet. Connectors, cables and digital separators.
  4. Transmission over copper wires. Basic properties. Technology of base band transmission (HDB3) and with modulation (ADSL and HDSL).
  5. Transmission over optical fibers. Basic properties of fibers, transmitter and receiver. Standards. Link budget. Connecting optical fibers.
  6. Radio links. Basic properties. Fading margin. Quality of the link. Link budget.
  7. Geographic information systems and their applications.
  8. Antenna systems and their elements. Installation. Frequency plan and interference.
  9. Data networks, basics of creating data networks.
  10. Multiplexers. Plesiochronous digital hierarchy and synchronous digital hierarchy (PDH and SDH).
  11. Basics of Ethernet technology. Mapping Ethernet in PDH and SDH. Inverse multiplexing.
  12. Remote control systems. SNMP technology.
  13. Electricity supply systems and grounding system for telecommunication equipment.
  14. Standardization and compatibility of the equipment.
  15. Technical control of transmission systems. Maintenance of telecommunication equipment. Basic instrumentation.
