Circuit Analysis Course code: 110407 | 6 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 2
Semester: 3
Requirements: Basis of mathematics and electrical engineering
Goal: Training students to determine the responses of electric circuits in time and complex domain.
Outcome: At the end of the course students should be qualified to determine the responses of electric circuits of the first and second order on specific forms of actuation, and in the case of accumulated energy in the circuit. They will know to perform the transformations of equations from time domain into frequency and complex domain, as well as the inverse transformations. They will know how to use program packages, that enable analysis of responses of electric circuits.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introductory lecture. Course content and organization. Signals and systems. Linear time invariant elements.
  2. Electric circuit response. Decomposition of response to:accumulated energy and actuation. Responses to Heaviside's and Dirac's function for the circuits of the first and the second order.
  3. Elements with two ports. Coupled inductors, invertors and convertors, dependent generators. Networks with two ports. Topology. Generalized methods of solving electric circuits.
  4. Frequency domain. Transformations from time domain to frequency domain, power, resonance, and anti-resonance, frequency response.
  5. Sinusoidal steady-state analysis.
  6. Laplace transformation. Definitions, characteristics, impulse response, and transform function of system, theorem of initial and final value. Solving circuit by using Laplace transformation. Concluding remarks. Directions of further professional development, self-evaluation of the course.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Ideal one port circuit elements. Power and energy. Passive elements.
  2. Response of circuits of the first and second order to Heaviside’s and Dirac’s functions.
  3. Response of circuit of the second order to periodic functions.
  4. Two-port networks.
  5. Applications of the Fourier transformation.
  6. Applications of the Laplace transformation (example: Butterworth’s filters).
