Requirements: Sound Recording
Goal: Students should achieve basic level of theoretical and practical knowledge about technical and creative processes involved in sound postproduction and sound design.
Outcome: Basic level of knowledge in hardware and software tools for sound design (Avid Pro Tools).
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introduction to sound design. Sound department in all phases of media production (preparation, recording and postproduction).
  2. Basics of dramaturgy of sound. Sound as a creative form of artistic expression.
  3. Sound postproduction studio. Basic configuration. Types of sound studios.
  4. Audio mixers. Basic configuration. Types of audio mixers. Signal flow chain.
  5. Audio processors. Basic types and working principles.
  6. Audio/video synchronization. Basic principles and systems.
  7. Audio signal measurement (level, frequency, phase, loudness…).
  8. Audio signal evaluation. Standards. How to listen sound. Objective and subjective control.
  9. Audio workstations. Complex studio audio systems vs working “in the box”.
  10. Basics of sound editing: Dialogue, ADR, ambiences, sfx, foley and music.
  11. Basics of sound mixing: pre-mixing and final mixing, mastering.
  12. Sound postproduction on film and TV. Workflow.
  13. Sound design in theater and radio. Workflow.
  14. Sound design in multimedia and new media. Workflow.
  15. Multichannel sound in media. Future of sound design.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Sound editing, ADR and foley recording for a 10 minute film insert.
  2. 5.1 mixing of a 10 minute film insert.
