Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies

Requirements: Familiarity with basic principles in electronics, as well as familiarity with enginering mathematics.
Goal: Introduction to fundamental principles and techniques that are used in contemporary communication systems.
Outcome: Understanding of signal analysis and signal processing techniques that are used in contemporary communication systems. Gaining fundamental knowledge for understanding more advanced courses in the field of telecommunications and signal processing.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introductory lecture (organization and course syllabus, relation to other courses).
  2. Telecommunication system model. Information, measure of the information.
  3. Classification of signals, time domain and frequency domain signal representation, spectral analysis of continuous signals.
  4. Sampling theorem and spectral analysis of discrete time signals.
  5. Telecommunication channel characteristics.
  6. Amplitude modulation.
  7. Frequency and phase modulation.
  8. Colloquium.
  9. Pulse amplitude modulation, pulse width modulation, pulse position modulation, pulse coded modulation.
  10. Digital baseband transmission. Bandpass digital transmission.
  11. Noise in communication systems.
  12. Error control coding.
  13. Multiplexing and multiple access techniques.
  14. Communication systems examples.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Fourier analysis of periodic and aperiodic continuous signals.
  2. Frequency characteristics of filters.
  3. Sampling theorem and discrete Fourier transform.
  4. Amplitude modulation.
  5. Frequency modulation.
  6. Quantisation and pulse coded modulation.
  7. Digital modulation.
  8. Error control coding.
