Requirements: Knowledge of fundamental communication theory
Goal: Getting to know advanced techniques and principles in digital communications with an emphasis on techniques used in mobile telecommunication systems.
Outcome: Understanding of signal processing used in digital telecommunications and getting acquainted with GSM and WCDMA standards.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. History, services, requirements, and technical challenges.
  2. Antennas and propagation of electromagnetic waves.
  3. Fading and multipath wave propagation.
  4. Principles of cellular radio networks.
  5. Interference and system capacity. Traffic intensity.
  6. Modulation and demodulation: ASK,PSK, FSK, QAM
  7. Colloquium.
  8. Diversity: time, space and frequency diversity.
  9. Error control codes: principles, block codes, convolutional codes.
  10. Speech coding.
  11. Multiple access techniques: FDMA, TDMA,CDMA,OFDMA.
  12. GSM, WCDMA.
  13. LTE.
  14. Mobile services market, development trends, equipment manufacturers, devices.
  15. Colloquium.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Antenna characteristics and design.
  2. Telecommunications channel models.
  3. Modulation and demodulation.
  4. Channel impact on BER.
  5. Diversity.
  6. Channel coding.
  7. Spread spectrum systems.
