Requirements: Basic knowledge of electronics is recommended.
Goal: This module is designed to introduce students to practical and theoretical aspects of modeling and designing of basic power converters and their controllers.
Outcome: After successful completion of this module, students should be able to use, design and maintain basic power converters and controllers.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introductory lecture, production, distribution and conversion of electric power
  2. The role and importance of power electronics in power distribution and conversion.
  3. Basic power electronics components: active (power switches SCR, GTO, BJT,MOSFET, IGBT) and passive (coils, transformers, capacitors, ultra/capacitors).
  4. Voltage and current measurement in power electronics.
  5. Basics of thyristor phase-control (voltage controller, phase-controlled rectifiers).
  6. Phase-controlled converters application in controlled motor drives, DC/DC converters (buck converter, boost converter, buck/boost converter, Ćuk converter.
  7. Chopers and their application in controlled electric motor-drives (industrial drives, traction drives, hybrid and electric vehicles) .
  8. Power factor correction (PFC) in power electronics. Increasing electric power quality. Basic topologies of PFC and their controllers.
  9. DC/AC converters, pulse with modulation (PWM), voltage and current fed inverters.
  10. DC/AC converters in controlled induction motor drives, basics of U/f control, introduction to vector control.
  11. DC/DC and DC/AC converters in renewable power sources (photo-voltaic, wind generators), basic topologies and controllers.
  12. Converters for high voltage DC transmition system (HVCD) of power
  13. Recent trends in power electronics component technology, SIC diodes and MOSFET
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Students independently or with a help of a tutor solve practical issues and tasks in power electronics. Tutorials are in compliance to the lectures. Round visits to the companies dealing with power electronics.
