High Voltage Equipment Course code: 120407 | 6 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 2
Semester: 3
Requirements: None
Goal: The goal of the course is to educate students about operating principles and design of high voltage equipment and devices. Also, students should learn about the requirements and technical characteristics of equipment, as well as how devices are to be chosen. Students are to be familiar with control of equipment and operating mechanisms of devices.
Outcome: After exam passed, students should be able to recognize high voltage devices, to know their operating principles, and to be able to select them in the projects. Also, students should know enough about control of devices and dangers that can arise from their usage and maintenance.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Metal-oxide surge arresters (design, technical characteristics, selection, application recommendations, and maintenance).
  2. Medium voltage fuses - basic elements of design, arc extinguishing, technical characteristics.
  3. Medium voltage fuses - application of fuses for HV transformers, motors, and condensers.
  4. High voltage insulators - types of insulators: post, suspension, composite insulators, and bushings. Application of insulators.
  5. High voltage circuit breakers - arc extinguishing neans, pneumatic, low-oil, sulphur-hexafluoride, and vacuum breakers.
  6. High voltage circuit breakers - operating principle, design, and selection.
  7. High voltage disconnectors and earthing switches - types and requirements, medium and high voltage disconnectors.
  8. High voltage disconnectors - pantograph type, horizontal center break type, knee disconnector type, and operating mechanisms.
  9. High voltage switch-disconnectors and contactors: requirements, operating principle, design, arc extinguishing, operating mechanisms, technical characteristics, and selection.
  10. HV reactors - types, short-circuit limiting reactors, design, technical characteristics, and selection.
  11. HV power cables - types, designation of cables, design, and selection.
  12. Instrument transformers - current transformers, design, and selection.
  13. Instrument transformers - voltage transformers, design, characteristics, and selection.
  14. High voltage SF6 gas insulated metal-clad switchgear - types, basic elements of design, one- and three-phase enclosed switchgear.
  15. SF6 switchgear - single-phase diagrams, configuration, and maintenance.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Numerical examples which alleviate understanding of high voltage equipment selection are realized in the lecture room.
