Relay Protection Course code: 120211 | 6 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 3
Semester: 6
Requirements: None
Goal: The goal of the course is to educate students about relay protective devices as well as the concepts of power system protection. Students learn about protective devices and protection systems of overhead and cable lines, transformers, generators, motors, and buses. The goal is to learn operating principles of relay protection and to design and maintenance protective systems.
Outcome: After exam passed, students should be able to select and sett relay protective devices. Also, they should be familiar with the design and concepts of substation protection.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introductory part: the role of the relay protection. Protective relay devices. Basic requirements.
  2. Protective relays: vercurrent, overvoltage, and directional protection.
  3. Protective relays: distance protection, over- and underfrequency protection.
  4. Protective relays: time-delay relays. Static relays.
  5. Protective relays: numerical relays.
  6. Overhead lines and cables protection: faults and abnormal operating conditions, overcurrent protection.
  7. Overhead lines and cables protection: directional, distance, differential and earth faults protection.
  8. Overhead lines and cables protection: Automatic reclosure and overload protection.
  9. Transformer protection: differential, Bucholz, earth fault, overcurrent, and overheating protection.
  10. Busbar protection: differential and overcurrent protection
  11. Generator protection: Stator winding protection, stator earth protection, rotor faults protection.
  12. Generator protection: differential stator protection, overheating protection.
  13. AC motor protection: short circuit protection, earth fault protection, thermal and undervoltage protection.
  14. AC motor protection: negative phase sequence protection, start/stall protection.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Numerical examples which alleveate understanding of practical setting of relays are realized in the lecture room. Several computer simulation exercises which demonstrate selection and setting of the relay protection are realized in the laboratory using Alternative Transients Program (ATP) software tool.
