Requirements: Basic knowledge about television signals.
Goal: Get to know the principles, technologies and devices used in digital television.
Outcome: Training for a job of digital television engineer.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introductory lecture. Digital TV systems in Europe and the world.
  2. Forming an SDI signal. Digital signal processing. Multichannel sound formats (5.1 and 22.2).
  3. Structure of digital television system of different formats (SD, HD, UHD).
  4. Source coding. Channel coding. Creating a transport stream. Encoders. Decoders.
  5. Multiplexing the television signal. Digital modulations.
  6. Regulations (ITU-R.BT601/656, ITU-R.BT709, standards relating to digital TV resolutions, etc).
  7. Digital satellite television DVB-S/S2.
  8. Digital cable television DVB-C/C2.
  9. Digital terrestrial television DVB-T/T2. MFN and SFN networks.
  10. IP television. DVB-H.
  11. Web television. Hybrid television, HbbTV.
  12. Interactive services.
  13. Video telephone and video conferencing image and sound transmission.
  14. Required equipment for measurements at transmitter and receiver sides. Measurement procedures.
  15. Digital TV signal receivers for different platforms.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Practical exercises follow theoretical instruction in the form of laboratory exercises. Laboratory exercises are performed in groups of 10 students in a digital HD television studio. At the exercises, each of the students receives concrete mini-projects to be realized.
