Goal: The goal of the course is to educate students about design, planning and exploitation of substations as well as production of electrical energy, hydro- and thermo power plants.
Outcome: After exam passed, students should be able to control switchgear apparatuses adequately. Also, they should be able to know some elements of designing process of the substations, and to exploit substations and power plants.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introduction to high-voltage substations - application, types, station arrangement.
  2. Calculation of short-circuit currents.
  3. Substations equipment and apparatus: buses, circuit breakers, switches, disconnectors, and earthing switches.
  4. Substations equipment and apparatus: short-circuit current limiting reactors, power and instrument transformers, and fuses.
  5. Single- and three-phase line diagrams of primary circuits.
  6. Interlocking and control of switchgear installations.
  7. Secondary installations - control, signalling, and protection.
  8. Station arrangements and layouts: outdoor and indoor switchgear installations, metal-enclosed switchgear, and metal-clad SF6-gas-insulated switchgear (GIS).
  9. Lightning protection of substations.
  10. Protective measures for persons working in substations.
  11. Earthing in high-voltage substations.
  12. Distribution substations examples.
  13. Electrical energy production.
  14. Hydro power stations: power produced, types of hydro power plants, types and selection of hydro turbines.
  15. Thermo power stations: technological schemes, unit auxiliaries, and typical operating regimes of thermal plants.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Numerical examples, presentations, and one vocational excursion follow theoretical instructions.
