Goal: Introduction of students to the telecommunication technologies and services and their applications in different settings.
Outcome: At the end of the course, students will have overview of different telecommunication technologies. Students will know properties, advantages and possible applications of these technologies in different professional settings.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Opening lecture (the organization and content of the course, links with other courses).
  2. Radio-frequency identification (RFID).
  3. Global navigation satellite system (GNSS).
  4. Wireless sensor network (WSN).
  5. Standard and additional services of fixed telecommunication networks.
  6. Personal and local area networks.
  7. Access networks: dial-up, ISDN, ADSL.
  8. Internet and Internet services (e-mail, telenet, FTP, SSH,WWW).
  9. Communication systems in automation (Modbus, EtherCAT, Profinet). Wireless communication between vehicles.
  10. Control communication networks - technologies and protocols (CAN, LIN, MOST, FlexRay).
  11. Voice communications over internet protocol networks (VoIP).
  12. Multimedia services based on internet protocol (IPTV).
  13. Digital audio broadcasting (DAB). Digital video broadcasting (DVB).
  14. Cellular networks.
  15. Concluding remarks. Directions of further professional development, self-evaluation of the course.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Spectrum analyzer. Analysis of wireless communication systems (Wi-Fi, personal area networks, cellular networks) and their spectral properties.
  2. Analysis of transmission mediums using spectrum analyzer.
  3. Analysis of GPS system and its parameters using mobile phone applications.
  4. Link budget calculation. Example for a GPS system.
  5. Practical implementation of local area network. Routing.
  6. Practical implementation of wireless local area network.
