Requirements: Knowledge of basic concepts in the field of communications.
Goal: The objective of the course is to familiarize with the principles of work and the use of communication measuring devices.
Outcome: Upon completion of the course, students will have the necessary knowledge to properly use laboratory devices and measure communication signals.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Introduction. Types and significance of communication measurements. Examples of measurement.
  2. Signals in the frequency and time domain.
  3. Spectrum analyzers - basic principles.
  4. Measuring signal level, bandwidth, measurement with spectrum analyzer.
  5. Measurement of modulation, measurement with spectrum analyzer.
  6. Measurement of noise, measurement with spectrum analyzer.
  7. Measurement of distortion, measurement with spectrum analyzer.
  8. Network analyzer - basic principles.
  9. Measurement of scattering parameters of two-port networks.
  10. Measurement of phase and group delay.
  11. Reflectometry and reflectometer.
  12. Measurements in optical transmission systems.
  13. BER (Bit Error Rate) testers.
  14. Measurements in communication networks. Protocol analyzers.
  15. Recapitulation of communication measurements and final considerations.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Practical training program follows the lecture.
