Electric Drives Course code: 121007 | 6 ECTS credits

Basic information
Level of Studies: Undergraduate applied studies
Year of Study: 2
Semester: 4
Requirements:
Goal: To provide students with the basic knowledge on the contemporary electrical drives, their components, electrical drives control principles and the area of their applications. Skills of implementing and tuning some commercially available drives are to be developed as well.
Outcome: Students will be able to understand, implement, tune and maintain contemporary electrical drives with DC, AC and PMS motors.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Electrical drive components and applied general mechanical theory.
  2. Frequently used electrical motor types, their characteristics and implementation. Permanent magnet DC motors, AC motors, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMS), reluctance motors, switching reluctance motors, stepping motors.
  3. Measuring in electrical drives, devices and components. Encoders (optical and inductive), Hall-effect current sensors (LEM), voltage and flux measurement, optical insulation. Processing of measured signals in digital systems.
  4. Permanent magnet DC motor control. Usually used controllers (hysteresis, proportional, integral, PI, PID). Means for controller tuning.
  5. Independent excitation DC motor control. Flux control, control in field weakening region, constant torque and constant power working areas.
  6. AC motors control. Tree phase system generation, PWM, space-vector modulation, U/f open loop control, synchronous frame, current control in stationary and synchronous frames, field oriented (vector) control (DFOC and IFOC).
  7. Natural speed-torque characteristics. U/f control in open-loop.
  8. Induction motor control, synchronous rotating frame, transformation, current control in stationary and synchronous frame. Vector control.
  9. Signal processors and their application in electrical drives. Just a survey.
  10. Modern courses of electrical drive development. Unsolved control issues.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Students independently or with a help of a tutor solve practical issues and tasks in electrical drive. Tutorials are in compliance to the lectures. Round visits to the companies dealing with electrical drives.
