Requirements: Knowledge of work on computer (operating system).
Goal: The objective of the course is to familiarize students with databases and basic techniques for designing databases and applications in information systems and setting up queries using the SQL programming language. Solving specific problems using the MS ACCESS database management system.
Outcome: Students are trained to independently design simple databases and applications and set complex queries over multiple tables.
Contents of the course
Theoretical instruction:
  1. Review and development of databases.
  2. Database systems.
  3. Data models.
  4. Basics of query languages.
  5. Queries with calculated values ​​and use of aggregate functions.
  6. Action and parameter queries.
  7. Review of the first part of the material.
  8. Design of relational databases.
  9. Normalization: 1NF, 2NF, 3NF, Boys-Kodova normal forms
  10. Basics of model objects - relations, concept of object, weak objects, connecting objects.
  11. Physical design of databases.
  12. Organization of data ANSI SPARC.
  13. Review of the other part of the material.
Practical instruction (Problem solving sessions/Lab work/Practical training):
  1. Creating databases, defining attribute, and assigning properties to fields.
  2. Selecting a primary key, downloading and linking tables from other databases and entering data.
  3. Working with tables, viewing data in a table view and linking tables (relationships between tables).
  4. Creating queries using QBE enviroment in Access.
  5. Queries over multiple tables and nested queries.
  6. Creating and editing forms in DBMS MS Access .
  7. Use forms to manipulate data.
  8. Creating and editing reports in DBMS MS Access .
  9. Reports for displaying data from a table or on a query basis and displaying the calculated sizes
  10. Creating a report for displaying data from a table or based on the query.
  11. Creating an application in MS Access.
